About Simon
Simon Thomson is an award-winning writer, director and actor working on unceded Gadigal land. His writing engages real-world issues through the lens of dark comedy, surrealism and magical realism. Having been born in Mauritius and lived in India and Papua New Guinea, Simon is interested in stories that transcend parochial anglo-centric myths of rural Australia and are more representative of Australian metropolitan and multicultural cities. Simon explores themes of social injustice, the foibles of relationships and mental health.
He has written three full length plays, two of which have been produced and performed around Sydney and is currently writing a crime thriller TV series about vampires in Sydney and a play about online Incel culture. Scary. His second play, The Park, was shortlisted for the Silver Gull Award and premiered at the New Theatre.
Simon has a BA with Honors in Drama and Film at The Australian National University, an Advanced Diploma in Acting from Sydney Theatre School and is currently completing a Masters of Writing for Performance at NIDA. As an actor Simon has performed both in Australia and internationally. Credits include include Steve in The Shadow Box (Old Fitz Theatre), Frank in Van De Maar Papers (Old 505), Fat Cherry in That Eye, The Sky (New Theatre), Pool, No Water, (STS), Provost in Measure for Measure (ANU), Caliban in The Tempest (STS) Angelo in Measure for Measure (for STS taken to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival), Scripps in The History Boys (Papermoon Theatre Company), Azdak in The Caucasian Chalk Circle (ANU), Lenny in Marisol (Grad Co/Sydney Fringe) and Leon/Nick in Speaking In Tongues (Grad Co/Chippen St Theatre).
Directing credits include Stephen Berkoff’s Brighton Beach Scumbags (ANU), CageFish, which he also wrote and appeared in as John (Grad Co/Terminal at the Factory Theatre), Trainspotting (Grad Co /Limelight on Oxford and Ginger, Black, Brunette, Blonde (Rogue Projects/Fringe Hub).
Simon is a proud member of Equity since 2015 and the Australian Writers Guild since 2020.
