Liam McIlwain

About Liam

Liam is a theatre director currently based in Sydney.

His long involvement with Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Les Misérables began as a cast member in the Australian tour in 2014. He has since been Resident Director, Deputy Associate Director and Choreographer for its international productions touring the USA, UK, Manila, Singapore, Dubai, São Paulo and Tokyo.

Other creative credits include Director and Choreographer for Catch Me If You Can (Central Queensland University), Assistant Choreographer for Shakespeare in Love (Melbourne Theatre Company), Co-Producer for Out From Under (Her Majesty’s Theatre/Seymour Centre), Director and Producer for The Brolly Follies (Judith Wright Centre), Choreographer for the short film Blueberry Lane and Director for the Les Misérables 30th Anniversary Gala in Tokyo in 2017, which featured over 100 performers from Broadway, the West End and Japanese productions.

Liam was a professional actor for 15 years, appearing in many stage productions in Australia and internationally. An advocate for better mental health practices in the industry, Liam helped found the Equity Wellness Committee at
MEAA in 2016 while sitting on the Federal Council, where he served as co-chair for four years.
