About Jacob
Jacob Sgouros is a Greek-Australian writer, actor, and musician based in Sydney, with a specific interest in writing for television. As a creative, Jacob bends towards telling drama-comedy hybrid stories in his never-ending quest to write something as contemporarily funny as Phoebe Waller Bridge’s Fleabag, but with an emotional punch as devastating as the last ten minutes of Phoebe Waller Bridge’s Fleabag. Growing up in rural New South Wales, he quickly took a shine to community theatre, getting his big break at the age of eight in the role of a reincarnated Elvis in a children’s adaptation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which enjoyed a sold-out week-long season to a very confused audience of roughly forty people. Having nonetheless caught the performance bug, Jacob moved to Western Australia after graduating high school, where he received a Bachelor of Performing Arts from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, before turning his attention to a Masters in Writing for Performance at the National Institute of Dramatic Art.
While at WAAPA, Jacob worked alongside award winning comedian, radio host, and actor Andrea Gibbs to create Objects In The Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear – a Site Specific worked devised and performed in Perth’s own King’s Park. In 2021, he starred in and composed the music for WAAPA’s production of Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle to great critical success. As part of the Australian Theatre for Young People’s National Studio program, Jacob’s work 2AM IN SUBURBIA was published by Currency Press as part of the program’s Intersection: Unleashed collection. As of late 2022, Jacob’s full-length version of 2AM In Suburbia is on the longlist for ATYP’s Foundation Commission.
Having come from a multicultural home, Jacob is passionate about using humour to tell stories about people attempting to juggle conflicting ideals, typically through the lenses of grief and family. When not writing or acting, Jacob can usually be found on the couch with his dog, Moose, trying to convince his partner that watching tv shows he has already seen too many times is not, in fact, a waste of time.
