About Haneen
Haneen Mahmood Martin is a Kuala Lumpur born, Malay-Saudi Arabian writer, artist, and arts worker.
For over a decade, Haneen has been working in the Australian arts industry; producing and championing unique works across visual, experimental and performing arts; literature, music and live events.
Migrating to Australia at age eight, Haneen grew up in Kaurna Yerta/Adelaide – the city where she first began developing her artistry. Against the backdrop of the South Australian arts scene, Haneen’s distinctive and undeniably unique style evolved; in time, she became one of the local industry’s most exciting and thought-provoking young artists.
Moving to the Northern Territory in 2018, Haneen’s career pathway continued to diversify as she began immersing herself further in the events and music space in Garamilla/Darwin; first, working as the General Manager of record label and office, Skinnyfish Music, and then in various producer and curatorial capacities at the Darwin Fringe Festival and Brown’s Mart.
Haneen’s tenure as Artistic Associate at Brown’s Mart, the home of Northern Territory performing arts, has seen a cultural change in vision and output beautifully conceptualised and delivered. Along with her fellow Artistic Associate Cj Fraser-Bell, Haneen’s influence was crucial in the establishment of programming that reflects the incredible talent that exists yet is so often overlooked by the wider Australian arts landscape. Her work as part of the Brown’s Mart team further bolstered a new chapter of forward-thinking programming and cultural impact for Brown’s Mart, largely under Haneen’s guidance.
Not only have recent years seen Haneen develop and deliver exciting arts programs in the NT, notably as Brown’s Mart’s Artistic Associate, she has also flourished as a member of the Curatorial Committee for Watch This Space; Manager of the National Young Writers’ Festival, Creative Producer with Next Wave, and as the Facilitator of Regional Scribes for Regional Arts Australia.
Haneen’s artistic voice is one that speaks to the empowerment and elevation of People of Colour, particularly within arts institutions. As such, she has also become trusted and sought-after as a consultant and mentor for industry peers.
Her work has been highlighted and featured at events including the NT Writers’ Festival (2020, 2022), the National Young Writers’ Festival (2020, 2021) and the Emerging Writers’ Festival (2019, 2023).
Recently completing a Master of Fine Arts (Cultural Leadership) from NIDA, Haneen has bolstered an already strong portfolio of professional achievements that has included various acknowledgements and awards.
These include being named a recipient of the Regional Arts Australia Fellowship (2021); an NT Performing Arts Award (2021); a finalist in Frankie Magazine’s Good Stuff Awards (2020); and being a semi-finalist in the NT Young Achiever Awards (2022).
Haneen’s advocacy for defined career pathways and possibilities for migrants in the arts industry has seen her emerge as an important figure in a fresh wave of Australia-based artists, producing work with longevity and legacy impact.
