TERRITORIANS TAKE ON NIDA

Two young people from the
Northern Territory are taking the first steps in the next stage of their acting
careers as new first-year students at NIDA.

Phoebe Grainer and Kyle
Walmsley are among 24 talented students selected
to undertake NIDA’s Bachelor of Dramatic Art in Acting from a pool of nearly 1,500
people who auditioned across Australia.

Along with their fellow
aspiring actors, Phoebe and Kyle will be tackling the different components of
creating a performance for theatre or screen, including voice, movement and
music.

Nineteen year old Phoebe is originally from Jabiru in
the Kakadu National Park and says the reality of being at NIDA is still sinking
in for her.

“Right now I just feel like a
sponge soaking up everything around me! I’ve only been here two weeks, but
already it feels like longer the training is just that intensive.

“I was so excited and
surprised to find out I got into NIDA. I auditioned because I thought it would
be good experience for me but never thought I’d be selected.”

Kyle, a twenty-five year old
from Rapid Creek, says being accepted to NIDA has given him a valuable opportunity
to work towards building his career and means he can focus on longer term
goals.

“I’d like to be a part of
growing the professional theatre scene in regional Australia, particularly in
the Northern Territory, and making sure that ‘regional’ theatre doesn’t mean ‘bad’
theatre.

“I’m still getting my feet on
the ground, but I know that, in the end, I want to use the skills I’ll learn at
NIDA to work towards seeing more marginalised voices included in Australian
stage, film and television productions.”

NIDA’s
