Ever wondered what goes on behind the doors of the school that trained some of Australia’s greatest actors, directors, writers, designers, costume and properties creators, screen and stage technicians?
On 17 May, the National Institute of Dramatic Art is throwing its doors open so that you can find out more about everything the centre has to offer from training award-winning actors like Cate Blanchett to introducing kids as young as two years old to the world of stage and screen.
“NIDA is the goal for many creative young people around Australia, and our Open Day is a great opportunity for them to learn more about what we do and how they can be part of our community whether in a full-time higher education course, or as participants in our extensive program of short courses,” says NIDA’s Director and CEO, Lynne Williams.
“Our experienced staff will be on hand to answer any questions and to showcase just how much NIDA has to offer across our undergraduate degrees in Acting, Design, Production, Properties, Costume, Staging, and our Masters degrees in Directing and Writing for Performance.
“Some of our successful alumni from across theatre, television and film, including Logie-winning actress Bonnie Sveen from Channel Seven’s Home and Away, will be joining us to tell you about their NIDA student journey and share their tips with future students.
“Bonnie will be joined by Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood (A Place to Call Home, Channel Seven), Brandon McClelland (Lovechild, Channel Nine), Liana Cornell (The Winter’s Tale, Bell Shakespeare) and Yalin Ozucelik (Cyrano De Bergerac, Sport for Jove and Gross und Klein, Sydney Theatre Company).”
Open Day is a great opportunity to try out the NIDA experience yourself, with workshops in acting for the stage or screen, improvisation, comedy and how to be a TV presenter.
Curious members of the public will be treated to performances by NIDA’s talented students, behind-the-scenes tours of the Parade Theatres, a peek into the props and staging workshops, and a revealing look at what goes into creating NIDA’s spectacular costumes.
If you are inspired by your glimpse into NIDA, you can also find out more about the huge range of short courses for all ages that are on offer throughout the year and around Australia, including school holiday classes for children and teenagers, intensive evening or weekend classes for adults, and corporate training for anyone looking to brush up on their presentation skills.
