NIDA Independent offers the two things that are hard to come by but essential to the process of creating: time and space.
This year, NIDA Independent is fostering the new work of six diverse companies through the creative development program.
These dynamic groups of creators will benefit from the chance to create new work in state of the art facilities, and the invaluable opportunity to be matched with industry mentors who will guide them throughout the year.
For the first time NIDA Independent will also be offering the creative residents an honorarium fee to contribute towards artist fees, travel and accommodation or equipment.
Now in its third year, NIDA Independent has seen over 150 artists develop new and innovative work. Artists have gone on to produce work at Sydney’s VIVID festival, Next Wave Festival, Tamarama Rock Surfers and Canberra’s You Are Here Festival.
This year’s artists are a varied and exciting mix of emerging and established voices:
Wonderbabes
Wonderbabes will be working on The Adventures of Wonderbabe the Terrible, written by NIDA Writing
for Performance graduate Kate McDowell and her long-time collaborators Rose
Maher and NIDA graduate Elsie Edgerton-Till.
G.Bod Theatre
Following a highly successful initial development with the
NIDA Independent Program in 2013, G.Bod Theatre continues to create a new stage
version of The Harp in the South by Ruth Park, one of the most-loved and
bestselling Australian novels of all time.
Constantine Costi
NIDA Directing graduate Constantine Costi with his
collaborators Michael Costi, and Stephen Lloyd Coombs will be creating a quirky
experimental comedy, White Heat,
about what is sacrificed in the pursuit of artistic perfection in the ludicrous
and passionate world of fine dining.
East Coast Theatre
Company
Directed by one of Russia’s most thoughtful fugitives,
Joseph Uchitel, and written by NIDA Head of Writing for Performance, Stephen
Sewell, Russian Egg-Flip will
surprise with the profundities that can be found in the funniest misfortunes.
Cursing the Sea
Cursing the Sea with NIDA graduate Kate Sherman will be
creating Sehnsucht – a new work responding
to question posed by Michael Leunig “What is worth doing and what is worth
having?”
Marquez Theatre
Laundry
Macondo’s Clothesline
is an original visual theatre play inspired by a micro story written by Gabriel
Garcia Marquez known as The Drama of a
Disillusioned Man. The work is original, highly experimental and ensemble
devised.
