NIDA and Opera Australia are excited to announce that the two organisations will partner to deliver a new course, the Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services.

The six month vocational course delivers the technical skills needed to work within an entry-level production role for theatre and live events as well as providing a great stepping stone for further study, including NIDA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (Technical Theatre and Stage Management).

NIDA’s Head of Vocational Studies, Mark Gaal hopes that this is the beginning of a fruitful and long partnership with Opera Australia.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Opera Australia on the development of this diploma. What better way to prepare students for a creative career than by working with an established company that presents more than 700 shows per year?

“Excitingly, the course will include a placement with the company to give students essential workplace experiences and practical learning opportunities.

“Students will also have the opportunity to connect with industry professionals, forging a solid foundation for future study and employment options in live production.

“NIDA and Opera Australia have had a long standing relationship. Opera Australia has been instrumental in providing mentors and work placements for NIDA students, while NIDA teaching staff often lend their professional expertise to Opera Australia productions or to help singers from the Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Program refine their performance skills.

Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini says that this new course is an important investment and offers opportunities for more young people to get involved in technical aspects of theatre.

“Opera Australia has incredibly high production values, and we know the importance of fostering the next generation of expertise in the theatre. As Australia’s national opera company, we are proud to be joining forces with NIDA to deliver this course. This new initiative strengthens our relationship with NIDA and we are excited to see the course up and running.”

The course will be available in the second half of 2015 at NIDA’s Kensington campus and for more information, please visitnida.edu.au/vet.
