This year’s Directors’ graduation productions organically cluster around three themes: adaptation, new Australian work and the German repertoire.
There are four Australian works, three of which are brand new.
David Burrowes has written and directed a short film based on the Cain and Abel Biblical story. Katie Cawthorne together with Writing for Performance students Laura Lethlean and Debra Thomas, has also written a new play on gender politics called Little Bitch.
Head of Writing for Performance, Stephen Sewell has worked with director Zebastian Hunter on a bi-lingual and circus version of Le Portrait de Dorian Gray, and Samantha Young has adapted a play by Tom Wright as a cabaret performance titled Hunger.
In addition to these Australian works, Heather Fairbairn along with playwriting graduate Krystal Sweedman has adapted Schubert’s operatic song cycle Winterreise, and Jessica Arthur will present German enfant terrible Falk Richter’s play Rausch which catches the Zeitgeist of our mediated world. Finally, Alastair Clark directs an updated version of the Greek classic Antigone.
Despite the score, everyone is a winner in this game.
