Summer 2014 is shaping up to be the season when Australians – and NIDA graduates – will grab a very well-earned chunk of the spotlight.
In Sydney, NIDA’s many talented alumni have been recognised with a swathe of awards for both performances and the incredible work which goes on behind the scenes.
The Sydney Theatre Awards attracted more than 300 members of Sydney’s theatre community to celebrate the best of 2013. NIDA graduates and their valuable contribution to the Sydney theatre scene were high on the list to receive the recognition of the leading theatre critics who judge the awards.
The Best Mainstage Production went to Sydney Theatre Company’s production Waiting for Godot, starring celebrated NIDA alumni Philip Quast, Richard Roxburgh and Hugo Weaving. This highly praised production also featured Lighting Design by NIDA graduate Alice Babidge.
The Best Independent Production was presented to Sport for Jove’s Cyrano de Bergerac, which starred Acting graduates Julian Garner, Robert Jago and Yalin Ozucelik.
Yalin also received the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Independent Production for the same work while Small and Tired’s Susan Prior won Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Mainstage Production.
Musical hit Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, starring NIDA’s John Wood, won three awards including Best Production featuring Set Design by Michael Hankin, Lighting Design by Nicholas Rayment and Costume Design by Teresa Negroponte.
Gabriela Tylesova won two awards for her work on STC’s production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead – Best Stage Design and Best Costume Design in a Mainstream Production – and verity Hampson won Best Lighting Design for Machinal.
