Alice Springs in the year 2039. A fish falls from the sky and lands at the feet of Gabriel York. It still smells of the sea. It’s been raining for days and Gabriel knows something is wrong. Eighty years earlier, his grandfather, Henry Law had predicted that fish would fall from the sky heralding a great flood that would overcome the human race. Written by award-winning Australia playwright Andrew Bovell, the mastermind behind the stage adaptation of Kate Grenville’s The Secret River, the action takes place between the worlds of these two men over the course of eight decades. Interweaving and overlaying human stories with environmental concerns as it traverses back and forth between London and the Australian desert, When The Rain Stops Falling asks the audience to put the pieces together. As we trace the history of a family, we learn that we cannot begin to understand the future unless we understand the past. This dynamic new production is directed by opera and theatre director and NIDA alumni Mark Gaal. Parallel narratives trigger images of layering and repetition as we hurtle through the decades in a design team including award-winning set designer Isabel Hudson.
